Mother accused of having son beat brother to 'beat gay away MAKES NO SENSE...
WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - A mother has been accused of having her 12-year-old son beat his brother in order to "beat the gay away," and she faces a misdemeanor child abuse charge as a result.
Police were called to an incident on West Walter Street Saturday, and officers say when they arrived, there were several people yelling and screaming, according to a Whiteville police report.
According to the report, a 15-year-old said his mother, Mary Gowans, had his 12-year-old brother strike him repeatedly, and he was not allowed to fight back.
She then reportedly made the teen strip down to his underwear, and proceeded to strike him with a belt across his body.
Police say there was a large abrasion on the 15-year-old's back.
Gowans, however, says the allegations aren't true. She said her son was intoxicated when he reported the incident to police, and that although she doesn't agree with the gay lifestyle, she would never harm her children.
According to Gowans, her 15-year-old son has been visiting a gay man, whom she heard had molested him.
Gowans said she called the police about the matter, but nothing has been done. She admitted to beating her son in an effort to stop him from visiting the man, and claims she was just trying to protect her son.
According to Gowans, the older son had hit the younger one, so she had the 12-year-old hit him back.

Florida boy, 12, dies from brain-eating parasite
Zachary Reyna, a 12-year-old Florida boy stricken with a brain-eating parasite, has died, according to a post Saturday on a Facebook page that's been providing detailed updates from the boy's family.
The post indicated that the LaBelle child died Saturday afternoon.
"The battle is over for Zac but he won the war," the post concluded.
About an hour later, a new message said that a ventilator was being used so that the boy's organs could be donated, adding that family and friends can visit him at Miami Children's Hospital during visiting hours Sunday.
"Even though Zac has passed, he will still be saving many lives," this new post said.
Doctors had given Zachary an experimental drug to treat the rare amoeba, called Naegleria fowleri, that he had. This same drug was used to treat 12-year-old Kali Hardig recently in Arkansas, after which she became only the third person in the last 50 years known to survive the deadly parasite.
Zachary's family told CNN affiliate WBBH they believe that the boy -- who they described as an active seventh-grader -- was infected while kneeboarding with friends in a water-filled ditch by his house on August 3.
Officials warn of brain-eating amoeba
After he was hospitalized, the boy underwent brain surgery, and doctors diagnosed him with primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, according to WBBH.
After news emerged regarding Zachary's diagnosis, the Florida Department of Health issued a warning to swimmers that high water temperatures and low water levels provide the perfect breeding ground for this rare amoeba.
Between 2001 and 2010, there were only 32 reported cases of people getting Naegleria fowleri in the United States, according to the CDC. Most of the cases have been in the Southeast.
Naegleria fowleri is found in hot springs and warm freshwater, most often in the Southeastern United States. The amoeba enters the body through the nose and travels to the brain. There is no danger of infection from drinking contaminated water, the CDC said.
"This infection is one of the most severe infections that we know of," Dr. Dirk Haselow of the Arkansas Department of Health told CNN affiliate WMC about Kali's case. "Ninety-nine percent of people who get it die."
The first symptoms of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis appear one to seven days after infection, including headache, fever, nausea, vomiting and a stiff neck, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"Later symptoms include confusion, lack of attention to people and surroundings, loss of balance, seizures and hallucinations," the agency website says. "After the start of symptoms, the disease progresses rapidly and usually causes death within one to 12 days."

Taylor, Miley, Gaga vie for attention at MTV VMAs
Miley Cyrus became the rare artist to upstage Lady Gaga, but a vengeful Taylor Swift managed to take the spotlight from both during the MTV Video Music Awards.
Swift appeared to utter an expletive when One Direction appeared at Sunday night's award show — a moment that lit up Twitter and was memorialized immediately in a GIF online — before thanking a former beau for helping her win another moonman trophy for "I Knew You Were Trouble."
"I also want to thank the person who inspired this song, who knows exactly who he is, because I got one of these," Swift said. "Thank you so much!"
Gaga changed costumes four times during her first return to the stage since hip surgery as she performed her new single "Applause" at the top of the show. It was a predictably unpredictable appearance for Gaga, who seemed to pump in boos over the over the sound system as she opened the song in a white nun's habit and square headdress. By the time she finished the song, she was surrounded by unitard-clad male dancers and wearing a thong bikini decorated in shells and a long blonde wig.
Cyrus immediately kicked things up well beyond provocative, however, as she appeared on stage with a multitude of dancing teddy bears in a bodysuit adorned with a cartoon character. She twerked to her song "We Can't Stop," changed into a nude bikini, ran a fan's foam finger along her privates as Robin Thicke appeared on stage to perform "Blurred Lines," then gave the singer a lap dance.

"Miley better go get a pregnancy test after all that grinding," comedian Kevin Hart joked afterward.
Gaga and Cyrus were just the first of a cavalcade of music's top stars performing Sunday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where the awards were held for the first time. Justin Timberlake — the top nominee with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis — was to be honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
Kanye West continued his stark portrayal of new music from his album "Yeezus," performing "Blood on the Leaves" with its controversial Nina Simone "Strange Fruit" sample in silhouette in front of a black and white picture of a tree.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were the early leaders, taking best hip-hop video for "Thrift Shop" and best video with a social message for their song "Same Love," which espouses marriage equality.
"Gay rights are human rights," Macklemore said during the telecast. "There is no separation."

N.J. Gov. Christie To Sign Bill Banning Gay Conversion Therapy
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie continues to eschew convention: The Associated Press reports. that he will sign a bill banning therapy that seeks to turn gay teens straight.
Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill Monday barring licensed therapists from trying to turn gay teenagers straight, making New Jersey the second state to ban so-called conversion therapy, along with California.
The bill passed both houses of the New Jersey Legislature with bipartisan support in June. Assemblyman Tim Eustace, who sponsored the bill and is openly gay, described the therapy as "an insidious form of child abuse."
In a note accompanying the bill, Christie said he believes people are born gay and that homosexuality is not a sin. That view is inconsistent with his Catholic faith, which teaches that homosexual acts are sins.
The Republican governor also said the health risks of trying to change a child's sexual orientation, as identified by the American Psychological Association, outweigh concerns over the government setting limits on parental choice.
"Government should tread carefully into this area," he said in the note, "and I do so here reluctantly."
"However, I also believe that on the issues of medical treatment for children we must look to experts in the field to determine the relative risks and rewards," Christie said, citing a litany of potential ill effects of trying to change sexual orientation, including depression and suicide. "I believe that exposing children to these health risks without clear evidence of benefits that outweigh these serious risks is not appropriate."
Gay rights activists applauded the ban but pushed for more.
"It is our truest hope that the governor will realize, as the majority of the legislature and a super-majority of the pubic have realized, that the best way to ensure lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender youth are protected from the abuse of being ostracized is to provide them with equality," Troy Stevenson, executive director of the state's largest gay rights group, Garden State Equality, said in a statement.
Christie previously vetoed gay marriage legislation. He has said he supports the state's civil union law, which was enacted to give gay couples the benefits of marriage but not the title. Gay couples have since sued, claiming that the law provides unequal treatment to same-sex couples. Their lawyers say the U.S. Supreme Court ruling granting federal benefits to gay married couples strengthens their case in state court, while Christie administration lawyers say the federal government should recognize the state's civil union law as the equivalent to marriage. A trial court decision is expected next month.
Gay rights groups say the practice of conversion therapy is damaging to young people because it tells them that it's not acceptable to be whoever they are.
Some social conservatives framed the debate as a parental rights issue, saying a ban on the counseling would limit the ability of parents to do what they think is best for their children.
The idea of conversion therapy is an old one that has increasingly drawn criticism for its methods. Last year, four gay men sued a Jersey City group for fraud, saying its program included making them strip naked and attack effigies of their mothers with baseball bats.
Lawmakers heard horror stories from some during hearings on the ban, including Brielle Goldani of Toms River, who testified she underwent electric shocks and was given drugs to induce vomiting after being sent to an Ohio camp at age 14 to become straight.
But, they also heard from Tara King, a Brick-based counselor, who said she should be allowed to "fix" what patients, even under-aged clients, want fixed.
